An essential component of your home computer setup is of course the printer which allows you to produce hard copies of your Word documents, spreadsheets, coupons or even websites. There are two main types of printers available for you to buy: inkjet and the laser printer. Inkjet printers just use ink in order to produce your documents whereas laser printers which makes use of toner in order to achieve it s results.

As both print using different technologies there are going to be pros and cons for each, however inkjet printers tend to be the more popular model as they cost significantly less than their laserjet counterparts. On the otherhand, one of the main qualms with inkjet printers is their constant need for ink to be replaced so the cost of buying new cartridges can quickly surpass the cost of the printer itself. All is not lost as there are number of ways that you can spend your money effectively with these handy hints on how to save money on ink cartridges.

One method of saving money is by refilling the ink yourself. There are lots of computer and stationary shops which will sell kits that allow you to take your old used ink cartridge and inject new ink into it. This is one of the cheapest methods you can use, however it can get extremely messy if you don t know what you are doing.

Another method of saving money is to use ink cartridges that have been recycled by a third party manufacturer. These companies specialise in selling previously empty ink cartridges that they have refilled with their own ink. This will inevitably cost you more than refilling it yourself, however it is going to be much less of a hassle. The main downside is that the quality of the cartridge and the printer ink itself can vary wildly from company to company so there is an element of risk in your purchase. If you do your research into the various manufacturers of ink cartridges then this should minimise your chances of purchasing poor products when you visit the shop. Do remember that even with researching it will still be possible to end up with inferior quality ink so bear this caveat in mind.

If you insist on buying the regular name brand ink cartridges then try to avoid buying them in store. A good alternative idea is to try buying them online where you are more likely to find discount or cashback schemes.

Try signing up for a reward program such as those run by shops like Staples who offer store credit in return for recycling empty ink cartridges.

If you tend to print excessively or in high volume then it could be a cost effective solution to buy printer ink in bulk. This may sound expensive, however it will definitely save you money in the long term.

If you still find that you are getting through a lot of ink very quickly then perhaps it could be worth investing a little more money and buying a laserjet printer. As mentioned they are a bit more expensive, however they are much more economical in the long run as the printer toner lasts for a long time.
